about

From the outset, this was an unusual recording. We asked ourselves, what if this was recorded without the use of spoken words, the whole process remaining in silence from the first rehearsal until the last take? Would it make any sense? What will happen to the group? How would we listen? What could we search for?

During five days of recording, the quartet, a recording producer and two filmmakers lived and worked together on the windswept Norwegian coast – in silence.

"It is the instruments themselves that breathe, wheeze: not who plays or who writes."
(from Salvatore Sciarrino's notes on 'Ombre nel mattino die Piero')

The music of Salvatore Sciarrino is taking place very much along the edges between sound and silence, noise and sound. Hence, as the players need to choose their points of action precisely and carefully, they are confronted with results that highly elude reproducibility and absolute definition. Everytime the piece is played, to a certain degree it has to be found, explored, adjusted anew.
